HOUSE OF VIRGIN MARY

This charming and peaceful site lies at the top of Bülbül Mountain (Nightingale Mt.) close to the ancient city of Ephesus.According to the bible, Jesus asked the disciple John to care for his mother after his death. It is recorded that John brought her to Ephesus around 37 A.D. Where she lived the remaining 11 years of her life.In the 19th century the site of the house was discovered following a ‘vision’ seen by a German nun. A tiny chapel was built on the remains of the existing house and having received the official sanction of the Vatican, Meryemanna became a place of pilgrimage. The red line around the wall marks the foundations of the building which do indeed date back to the 1st century. When you visit Meryemanna you will notice thousands of rag ribbons tied to the trees which is a Turkish muslim custom as a holy offering or simply for ‘good luck’. Every Sunday an open-air mass is celebrated at the site. Here you will have the chance to drink from the three fountains of Health, Wealth and Fertility. You will also notice many Turkish people visiting Meryemanna as muslims regard Jesus and Mary as saints. The year 2000 was very important to the site as huge celebrations took place welcoming pilgrims from all over the world to mark the birthday of Jesus.
